๐ฟ The Kratky method, named after its creator Dr. Bernard Kratky, is a passive hydroponic system that involves growing plants in containers filled with a nutrient solution. With mason jars, you can easily create a compact and visually appealing setup to cultivate a variety of plants, including herbs, leafy greens, and even small vegetables.
In the Kratky method, you will not need to add water to the mason jar during the growing process. You add the initial water at the beginning, and as the plants uptake water and nutrients, the level gradually decreases. The absence of additional water addition is one of the distinguishing features of the Kratky method.
The reason you do not need to add water is because as the plant grows it will take in water leaving a gap between the bottom of the net cup and the nutrient solution. This air gap provides the plants with a necessary oxygen supply. As the roots take up water from the nutrient solution, the air gap increases, and the water level gradually reduces over time, and the plant learns to access oxygen from the airspace above the solution. The oxygen in the air gap is vital for root respiration and nutrient absorption.
The concept behind this method is that the plants will use up the available water and nutrients before the solution runs out, thus completing their growth cycle. It’s important to note that the Kratky method works best for smaller plants with shorter growth cycles, such as leafy greens and herbs, but can be used for other varieties as well.
Remember to regularly monitor the water level and nutrient solution strength and adjust as needed. This way, you can ensure that your plants receive the necessary water, nutrients, and oxygen to grow successfully in the Kratky method using mason jars.
A note about light: In the Kratky method, the roots in a clear jar can be affected by light exposure. Exposing the roots to light stimulates the growth of algae on the roots. Algae growth can compete with the plants for nutrients and potentially hinder their growth.
To prevent light exposure to the roots, you can either wrap the jar in an opaque material or paint it to block out light. This helps maintain a dark environment for the roots and discourages the growth of algae.
Let’s look at the list of supplies (Full Supply List is below.:
1.๐ฟ Mason Jars: Select pint or quart-sized mason jars with lids. I prefer wide-mouth quart (32 oz) jars. I like these jars because they were not branded and were smooth making it easy to paint: 6-Pack of Wide Mouth Quart Size Jars
Although transparent jars allow you to view and admire the root growth and water level, it’s better that the jar is opaque to prevent algae growth. As mentioned, I prefer to paint my jars, but they also make sleeves specifically for that purpose, or you can buy opaque jars. You can even use dark socks or make your own sleeve!
When I decided to paint, I was concerned with which paint to use, I was concerned about my beautiful plants touching the sides and wanted to be sure it was non-toxic. I went with Rust-oleum Charcoal Colored Chalk Paint The jars turned out super cute and I literally use chalk to write the name and date of the planting right on the jar. If you prefer a sleeve here’s a great option: Mason Jar Sleeves
2. ๐ฑ Net Cups: These will serve as plant holders, allowing the roots to grow down into the nutrient solution.ย If you’re using wide mouth quart jars, the 3-inch net cups fit perfectly over the rim of the jar.ย The Net Pots I found came with 10 cute plant labels, note needed for the mason jars, but I was able to use them in my outdoor raised beds:ย 12 Pack of 3-Inch Net Cups
3. ๐ฟ Growing Medium: Choose a medium that retains moisture and provides support.ย I’ve been pretty happy using rockwool: Rockwool starter plugs for hydroponics.ย Other options include perlite, vermiculite, or coconut coir.ย You may want to experiment to find the one that works best for you, a lot of people swear by coconut coir, but it didn’t work well for me.ย Luckily it was perfect for the little pots I use for my weekly plantings of grass for our cats! ๐ปย
4. ๐ง Nutrient Solution: Hydroponic nutrient solutions provide the essential elements for plant growth. Pick a high-quality solution suitable for your desired plants and follow the instructions for mixing. This is what I use: MASTERBLEND 4-18-38 Complete Combo Kit Fertilizer Bulk (2.5 Pound Kit) You’d be surprised how small the bags are, but they do last a while.
5. ๐ pH Test Kit: Ensure proper nutrient absorption by monitoring and adjusting the pH of your solution. A pH test kit or pH meter will help you maintain the ideal pH range of 5.5 to 6.5.
Inexpensive pH meter
6. ๐ฑ Seeds or Seedlings: Select your favorite plant varieties to grow hydroponically. Leafy greens, herbs, and compact vegetables like cherry tomatoes are excellent choices.
Great Organic Herb Starter Pack
7. ๐ฆ Water: Use filtered or tap water, allowing it to sit for 24 hours to allow chlorine to dissipate. Ensure you have enough water to fill the jars and create a reservoir.
8. ๐ Optional: Grow Light – If natural sunlight is limited, consider using a grow light to supplement the light requirements of your plants. LED grow lights are energy-efficient and perfect for small-scale setups. Grow Light for Smaller Spaces
Setting Up Your Kratky System with Mason Jars:
1. ๐งผ Clean and sanitize your mason jars and lids before use to maintain a healthy environment for your plants.
2. ๐ช Create a hole in the center of each jar lid that fits the net cup securely. Optionally, only use the outer ring from the two-piece Mason jar lid.
3. ๐ฑ Fill the net cups or plastic cups with your chosen growing medium, if using rockwool, soak it first. Leave enough space for roots to grow and access the nutrient solution.
4. ๐ Place the net cups in the jar. If using 3-inch cups with wide mouth quart jars, they should sit nicely on the rim of the jar. Otherwise, you may to screw the lid on right away to secure the cup.
5. ๐ง Mix the hydroponic nutrient solution according to the instructions provided. Adjust the pH as needed.
6. ๐บ Fill each mason jar with the nutrient solution, fill to about 1/3 of net cup. Depending on what you are planting, the solution will last the lifetime of the plant.
7. ๐ฑ Plant your seeds or seedlings in the growing medium within the net cups or plastic cups.
8. ๐ Secure the lids tightly on the mason jars, creating a sealed environment for the plants to thrive and access nutrients.
๐ฟ Embrace the wonders of the Kratky method and witness the magic of hydroponic gardening in your very own mason jars! This simple yet effective technique allows you to nurture flourishing plants without the need for extensive equipment. Join the growing community of hydroponic enthusiasts and unlock the joys of soil-less cultivation. Let your green thumb shine and enjoy the bountiful harvests! ๐ฑโจ
